Through a partnership with grocery delivery provider Instacart, specialty pet goods provider Petco has launched PetcoNow, an on-demand delivery service that brings Petco products to animal lovers’ doors in an hour or less.

While Postmates users could theoretically ask their courier to pick up some pet products, this is the first on-demand delivery app specific to the pet retail category. The service — accessible throught the PetcoNow app and web portal — provides customers with a selection of approximately 13,000 Petco products, including all food (dry kibble, wet, fresh, frozen, freeze-dried), treats, toys, and supplies for pets ranging from dogs and cats to fish and birds.

The service is currently active in 14 major markets, and will add two more — Miami and Chicago — by the end of the month.

Call it another part of the ‘uberfication’ of everything. By providing the kind of instant on-demand ordering that mobile-minded customers have come to expect, Petco aims to offer convenience and personalization that will inspire consumers to choose its products over that of its competitors. Ideally, the app will both boost mobile orders and build brand affinity that drives increased in-store visits.

“In today’s on-demand retail economy, customers expect to have the world at their fingertips,” said Brad Weston, Petco’s EVP and CMO. “PetcoNow represents an evolution in the way we’re able to provide quality products and customer service to pet parents. Combining our 50-year heritage, expertise and retail footprint with strategic partnerships ensures we stay at the forefront of innovation in today’s changing marketplace.”
